It has been a while since we have published any updates about DomainRecord.Info, but there have not been any significant changes to the website. Today, though, there are some new developments.

To start with, the community feature we offer on DomainRecord.Info – commenting on whois search results, has been updated. Previously the back-end was provided via integration of Intense Debate. It has now been replaced by Disqus. We did that fore few reasons:

We have tested Disqus in he past, maybe two or three years ago. At that time we chose to stick with Intense Debate, because it seemed better maintained, had a better integration process, as well as better features. But since Automatic acquired the platform there have not been any updates, new features, or most important fixing of some of the plugins that the platform offers. It seems like once Intense Debate was acquired the only thing that was new was integration of the WordPress.com SSO, then all development was abandoned.

The Intense Debate web interface could also use some improvements or redesign. So could the integration interface on non-WordPress powered websites. That interface often seemed clunky and over-burdened with buttons and such.

Disqus recently completed an updated, improving performance and offering a handful of new features. The one we really like is cross promotion of website activity (i.e. Promoted Discovery) at the bottom of of each comments thread.

Personally, I don’t think that there will be any new developments with Intense Debate. Especially because of the WordPress JetPack plugins suite and the JetPack Comments, which seems like something that might evolve into a native WordPress service aimed to replace Intense Debate.

Some of the other changes we have been making are:

Optimization of the core source code, aiming to improve speed and enabling the addition of new features.

We are also working on developing a proprietary domain and IP whois querying engine. We are aiming to replace the current whois back-end (phpWhois) with something which is more malleable, enabling us, as previous mentioned, to add new features and tools for DomainRecord.Info’s users.

At this time we are planning to replace phpWhois with our engine by the end of spring 2013. Followed by the release of new tools and new website layout starting mid-summer.

It has been about a year since we launched SpellItBack.com. It has a single function, to return a user’s text input in revers. It was a fun experiment, meant not only to entertain but maybe also to offer some mental exercise.

Since the website was an experiment, we did not promote it much, so an audience did not mature around it.

We have decided to retire it at the end of November.

DomainRecord.Info (DRI) is currently down for maintenance. After recent changes to our server infrastructure it became clear that parts of the code behind what made DomainRecord.Info a great whois search engine have become outdated. After reviewing the newly aroused errors, we have decided that instead of performing patch work, it will be best to rewrite portions of the website.

The goals for developing DomainRecord.Info anew are:

Make the website more independent from the server’s hardware and configuration. – Here we are looking to have any frameworks (php PEAR) DRI depend on, to become part of the website. Currently DRI relies on PEAR already being installed on the system. This will allow the DRI to freely be transferred/sold to another entity.

Improve self-sufficiency by decreasing the use of third-party scripts and embedded services. – This is partly about the whois search engine, but mostly about the use of third-party embedded services, like the Intense Debate commenting system.

Face lift to the layout, and the addition of new features.

We would like to officially introduce Hive Minds Gaming, a gaming news syndication website.

Although it has been around since 2006, Hive Minds Gaming has seen some changes in the last few years. The content on the website and its sources have changed. What started as a simple Digg relay web site, showing the lasted and most popular gaming related diggs, has evolved to a web site which is able to aggregate its own news articles.

We decided to announce the web site, because we are nearing the end of a new design of the web site. The over all content layout on the page is cleaner. Articles and article images are also presented in a more pleasing manner. View the Hive Minds Gaming beta site.

Hive Minds Gaming currently parses over 28 separate feeds. If you have a gaming web site, and you would like it syndicated by Hive Minds Gaming, please let us know so we can review it.

When bookmarking search results Domain Record Info (DRI) pages it became difficult to determine, at a quick glans, which domain record a bookmark points to. Prior to the changes our page titles displayed the web site name – Domain Record Info – before the domain name, thus when a user has more than one DRI bookmarks in their favorites he or she had to expend their bookmarks navigation window to view the complete title of the bookmark. As all of these extra actions consume the user’s time and detract from the usability of the web site, changes had to be made. And changes were made, resulting in positive usability improvements. Now, after a successful search, the domain name is the first thing displayed in the the page title, making it easier for You, our loyal service users, to navigate your bookmarks and Domain Record Info.

Please, keep sending us your feedback and ideas. You can also leave them as a comment below.

Basic layout, functioning search and results, as well as various site information and policies are now available on the website. There is a long list of other features, like IP trace, ranking and domain appraisal, to be implemented, but at this time further development of this project will be placed on hold. There are more urgent ones that must be completed. The gaming news aggregator site is almost complete, and the planing stage of the domaining web sites is done. It is time to start development process.

Looks like DomainRecord.Info did not stay on the back burner for too long. We have implemented commenting/discussion software from Intense Debate. Now when a user performs a whois look up, on the DNS record search results page they have the ability to leave comments regarding the domain or IP they look up, or respond to others who have already commented. Once the user has performed a whois check, all they have to do is either scroll below the DNS record whois results or click on the Discuss this domain link to be taken to the the community section of the page.

Implementing this allows us to establish a community, but most of all it help share information. For example domainners can conduct discussions about a domain, its value and traffic. Contact information can be exchange or business can be conducted off site, but only made posible by connecting the two parties via the DomainRecord.Info community. System and network administrators as well as members of anti-SPAM communities can comment on IPs. They can share background information, as well as type of SPAM they are receiving from the IP in question. Methods and strategies for blocking or filtering can be shared between administrators, who might have not met if not for the direct information sharing provided after each DNS record.

With this move we are striving to provide user with a centralized platform for sharing information. Having the community opinion and knowledge available to users in one place will help improve productivity by cutting out time spend searching the Internet to accumulate partially useful bits and pieces of information.

Although DomainRecord.Info has been available to the public since 2007, a layout for the website was never implemented. The whois script was simply installed and provided for everyone to use.

Today this was changed. A short description/disclaimer was added to the home page, explaining what the web site is about and what it does and does not. The search form size was adjusted so was the page displaying results. Most important of all a “ShareThis” button was added, allowing users to easily share any domain or IP record information on their blog, social network of choice or email it to someone. As far as usability, the web site is very easy to navigate with a simple design.

After this small update, the DomainRecord.Info project will be placed again on the back burner due to some nearly completed upcoming projects. One involves gaming news and the other is DomainVentory, which will offer domain monetization. Once these web services have gone live and are stable, DomainRecord.Info will be revisited so we can determine what new features could be added to the web site, making it more feature rich and useful to its users.

We had to undergo another server change. This one was necessary due to poor server performance on behalf of FDC Servers and their VDS infrastructure.

Because the last server we leased was located in the FDC Servers data center, but not under their management, we wanted to keep all our data within 10 minutes of driving distance. But that was not the the reason for the switch. The issue was that renting a dedicated server from FDC Servers, with decent configuration, would have cost me beyond what I was willing to and more so able to spend every month. We had to settle with leasing a virtual dedicated server. This did not work out very well, because FDC is using VZ for their virtualization software. We use Webmin and Virtualmin, and those two in conjunction with MySQL just do not work very well with VZ. The server would hand ever couple of hours and become inaccessible from the outside, that resulted in a lot of down time and very poor performance from the hosted websites. Toped with countless hours of lost productivity, due to the slow performance of the system, something had to be done.

After some hunting we ended up leasing a server from ThePlanet. We did not want to lease from any other data center in Chicago, because of stories we were told negative customer experience. We are very happy with ThePlanet and the performance we are receiving from the dedicated server we are leasing from them.

Due to increasing costs of operation the host, from which our server was being rented, closed its doors yesterday. Because of the number of sites hosted (not yet listed on the MFI website, but a list and a short description can be viewed on the Hive Minds Hosting website), and the comfort of being in control of a server and its resources, and because we like to keep our data close, we decided to move everything to a VPS – a virtual private server, rented from the same data center in the CBOT building, where our last host had collocated its servers. It was a fast and affordable solution for the situation.

Because the VPS servers, FDC Servers offers, are simply server shells, the last 5 days were spent looking through RPM repositories, installing and configuring software. Work often ended early in the morning, about 2:30 AM every morning. But service interruption went pretty much unnoticed, because the server setup and the data migration were completed on time. It is good to have a sufficient notice when vital changes are about to take place.

What is Morpheed.com?

Morpheed is a RSS aggregator. In addition to headlines aggregation, the site provides job opportunities for freelancers by aggregating listings from variety of job related feeds and sites, as well as CSS tutorials. Morphed’s backend is WordPress, which I was surprised to find out, because I never looked at WordPress as a RSS aggregator tool. But in the end, WordPress has come a long way in its development and now can qualify as almost an accomplished CMS (Content Management System), especially with its extendibility through plug-ins. Currently Morpheed runs on three separate installations of WordPress. In addition, the headline categories are somewhat concentrated on specific companies (Apple, Google and Microsoft), instead of general terms like travel or sports.

What is next for Morpheed.com?

The first thing I am going to do is bring the site from operating on three independent WordPress installations to one. This will make easier managing the various sections of the site (headlines, jobs and css), as well as adding other sections in the future without having to install WordPress once again. Following that, I will restructure the headlines’ categories. Articles need to be better calcified and thus easier to browse. A contact and “include my feed” forms will be added as well.

After the above are completed, I will look into adding more sections to the site and a possible redesign.

More to come for Morpheed.com in the future. In the mean time go on Morpheed and see what is happening in the world.
