DRI – easy whois check URL

A little over a week ago we added a usability improvement to the DomainRecord.Info service. We have created a search shortcut to save you a couple of steps to viewing the search results.

Instead of having to go to the website home page to use the search form, now all you have to do is enter in your address bar whois.domainrecord.info/<domain name> to view the whois results. Simply replace <domain name> with the domain or IP you would like to see a whois record for.

We hope that this feature will encourage you to use the service even more. Feel free to leave us your feedback on this improvement in the comments below. As always, if you have any suggestions or need help feel free to contact us.

Introducing Hive Minds Gaming – a gaming news aggregator.

We would like to officially introduce Hive Minds Gaming, a gaming news syndication website.

Although it has been around since 2006, Hive Minds Gaming has seen some changes in the last few years. The content on the website and its sources have changed. What started as a simple Digg relay web site, showing the lasted and most popular gaming related diggs, has evolved to a web site which is able to aggregate its own news articles.

We decided to announce the web site, because we are nearing the end of a new design of the web site. The over all content layout on the page is cleaner. Articles and article images are also presented in a more pleasing manner. View the Hive Minds Gaming beta site.

Hive Minds Gaming currently parses over 28 separate feeds. If you have a gaming web site, and you would like it syndicated by Hive Minds Gaming, please let us know so we can review it.

DRI – first service abuse block.

Last night we had to block our first service abuser. Over 21000 automated queries in just few days! The persons who had set up the automated script have been consuming over 90% of the bandwidth used by the site every month. The script always checked .fr domains. Usually three to four letters long.

Looking over the site logs, this has been happening for a very long time. Something we were aware of, but until few weeks ago, when we decided to further develop DomainRecord.Info we didn’t really found this to be a problem. It was simply a nuisance, which we saw as unethical due to the way the queries were executed and the data retrieved.

Hopefully it will be a while before we have to block someone again.

DRI – good to go.

We have completed the initial setup and design of DomainRecord.Info. Basic layout, functioning search and results, as well as various site information and policies are now available on the website. There is a long list of other features, like IP trace, ranking and domain appraisal, to be implemented, but at this time further development of this project will be placed on hold. There are more urgent ones that must be completed. The gaming news aggregator site is almost complete, and the planing stage of the domaining web sites is done. It is time to start development process.

DRI – domain discussions

DomainRecord.Info DNS record comments

DomainRecord.Info DNS record comments

Looks like DomainRecord.Info did not stay on the back burner for too long. We have implemented commenting/discussion software from Intense Debate. Now when a user performs a whois look up, on the DNS record search results page they have the ability to leave comments regarding the domain or IP they look up, or respond to others who have already commented. Once the user has performed a whois check, all they have to do is either scroll below the DNS record whois results or click on the Discuss this domain link to be taken to the the community section of the page.

Implementing this allows us to establish a community, but most of all it help share information. For example domainners can conduct discussions about a domain, its value and traffic. Contact information can be exchange or business can be conducted off site, but only made posible by connecting the two parties via the DomainRecord.Info community. System and network administrators as well as members of anti-SPAM communities can comment on IPs. They can share background information, as well as type of SPAM they are receiving from the IP in question. Methods and strategies for blocking or filtering can be shared between administrators, who might have not met if not for the direct information sharing provided after each DNS record.

With this move we are striving to provide user with a centralized platform for sharing information. Having the community opinion and knowledge available to users in one place will help improve productivity by cutting out time spend searching the Internet to accumulate partially useful bits and pieces of information.

DRI – layout update.

Although DomainRecord.Info has been available to the public since 2007, a layout for the website was never implemented. The whois script was simply installed and provided for everyone to use.

Today this was changed. A short description/disclaimer was added to the home page, explaining what the web site is about and what it does and does not. The search form size was adjusted so was the page displaying results. Most important of all a “ShareThis” button was added, allowing users to easily share any domain or IP record information on their blog, social network of choice or email it to someone. As far as usability, the web site is very easy to navigate with a simple design.

After this small update, the DomainRecord.Info project will be placed again on the back burner due to some nearly completed upcoming projects. One involves gaming news and the other is DomainVentory, which will offer domain monetization. Once these web services have gone live and are stable, DomainRecord.Info will be revisited so we can determine what new features could be added to the web site, making it more feature rich and useful to its users.

Server switch

Due to increasing costs of operation the host, from which our server was being rented, closed its doors yesterday. Because of the number of sites hosted (not yet listed on the MFI website, but a list and a short description can be viewed on the Hive Minds Hosting website), and the comfort of being in control of a server and its resources, and because we like to keep our data close, we decided to move everything to a VPS – a virtual private server, rented from the same data center in the CBOT building, where our last host had collocated its servers. It was a fast and affordable solution for the situation.

Because the VPS servers, FDC Servers offers, are simply server shells, the last 5 days were spent looking through RPM repositories, installing and configuring software. Work often ended early in the morning, about 2:30 AM every morning. But service interruption went pretty much unnoticed, because the server setup and the data migration were completed on time. It is good to have a sufficient notice when vital changes are about to take place.

Morpheed.com Acquired.

Just about a week ago I acquired Morpheed.com. I came across Morpheed.com, again last week, as I was looking through some of my thousands of bookmarks. As I was browsing through the site I noticed that it was listed for sale. So, I decided to buy it and see what I can turn it into.

What is Morpheed.com?

Morpheed is a RSS aggregator. In addition to headlines aggregation, the site provides job opportunities for freelancers by aggregating listings from variety of job related feeds and sites, as well as CSS tutorials. Morphed’s backend is WordPress, which I was surprised to find out, because I never looked at WordPress as a RSS aggregator tool. But in the end, WordPress has come a long way in its development and now can qualify as almost an accomplished CMS (Content Management System), especially with its extendibility through plug-ins. Currently Morpheed runs on three separate installations of WordPress. In addition, the headline categories are somewhat concentrated on specific companies (Apple, Google and Microsoft), instead of general terms like travel or sports.

What is next for Morpheed.com?

The first thing I am going to do is bring the site from operating on three independent WordPress installations to one. This will make easier managing the various sections of the site (headlines, jobs and css), as well as adding other sections in the future without having to install WordPress once again. Following that, I will restructure the headlines’ categories. Articles need to be better calcified and thus easier to browse. A contact and “include my feed” forms will be added as well.

After the above are completed, I will look into adding more sections to the site and a possible redesign.

More to come for Morpheed.com in the future. In the mean time go on Morpheed and see what is happening in the world.
